We are keen to work with you to provide the best education possible for your children.

In KS2 each class teacher is available, on one day each week, to meet briefly with parents and carers after school. (Usually Tuesday or Thursday) Longer discussions can be arranged by making an appointment.

We also have two more formal evenings for parents and carers.

At the end of the year, in the Summer term, we contact parents and carers giving an end of year report for each child.

As children take part in more formal ongoing assessments, SATs in May, we ask that families make an effort to avoid absences at this time.

Pupil Safety
In the interests of the safety of the children we would appreciate your co-operation in observing our school safety code.

There are three pedestrian entry/exit points that should be used by all children and adults entering and leaving school premises. Two of these are situated on Ninelands Lane and one is on Derwent Avenue. The school drive must not be used as a footpath.

At the front of the school there is an access gate for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Adults are asked, wherever possible, to keep to the marked footpaths and avoid crossing play or sports areas. Nursery parents are asked particularly to observe this rule when collecting and delivering children during the lunchtime period when Key Stage 1 and 2 children are at play.

The school is protected by security fencing and during the school day all gates other than the gate adjacent to the steps on Ninelands Lane are kept locked. If you need to visit school during school times please use this entrance. The school has security access systems so all visitors must enter the school via the main entrance to the Key Stage 2 building, which faces these gates.

The other gates are opened to allow access at the start and end of school sessions.
Pupils should arrive at school from 8.45am. The school gates are locked at 9.15am.

The gates are re-opened at 11.15am and closed at 11.45am for morning nursery parents. Pedestrian gates are re-opened at 12.15pm to allow parents of afternoon nursery pupils to access the nursery. They are re-locked at 1.15pm. The gates are re-opened at 3.15pm and locked at 4.00pm other than on nights when extra curricular activities are taking place. On those evenings they are locked at 4.30pm.

Vehicle access is restricted to staff cars, delivery vehicles and cars carrying a disabled person.

Parents should not bring vehicles in to the school grounds. Please observe the parking restriction on Ninelands Lane, Derwent Avenue, Purbeck Grove and Ninelands Spur and avoid parking on zig-zags or obstructing driveways.

Dogs must not be brought into the school grounds at any time.

Please help us to keep your children safe by following our safety code

Discipline
A posisitive approach to behaviour and attitude is promoted in our school. We aim to foster self-discipline and an awareness of the rights and needs of others.

Emphasis is placed on the need for good behaviour, courtesy and consideration for others. Children are involved in drawing up their own class code of conduct.

Circle time may be used to discuss matters relating to discipline. This is a method used to promote self-esteem through sharing feelings and experiences and examining methods of resolving problems amicably.

When children have misbehaved the problem can usually be resolved through talking and reasoning. Where a child can make amends for his/her behaviour he/she is encouraged to do so.

When it is considered that some form of punishment other than a verbal rebuke is required, consideration is given to the nature and frequency of the offence. In most cases the punishment will be a loss of privileges.

If necessary, parents are informed of problems by letter or telephone and are invited occasionally to school to discuss the problem and agree appropriate action. With parental agreement the School Support Services may be asked to advise on an appropriate social skills learning programme.

Persistent or serious misbehaviour at lunchtime would result in parents being required to take their children home over the lunchtime session.

The ultimate sanction is suspension. This would be used where the child’s behaviour would constitute a danger to himself/herself or seriously disrupt the learning of peers. The Leeds Education Authority guidelines would be followed in such a case.

Pastoral Care
The school aims to provide an atmosphere of welcome and care for all pupils, parents, staff and visitors.

The safety and welfare of each pupil is of fundamental importance. Pastoral care is a shared responsibility of the headteacher and class teachers and the supervisory assistants employed in school.

Parents are asked to provide emergency daytime telephone numbers.

It is important to inform school if there are any changes to emergency arrangements eg parent’s change of daytime work or home telephone number.

In the interests of safety we ask parents to collect Key Stage 1 children at the end of the school day and to notify school (by letter or telephone call) of any changes in your normal collection arrangements.

Homework
There are many purposeful ways you can help your child at home. Each term you will receive a Newsletter which sets out details of the term’s learning programme for your child. We value your help and support in this learning at home. Throughout your child’s school career you will also be asked to help to promote literacy skills by assisting with reading, spelling and writing.

You will also be asked to help develop numeracy skills by supporting your child’s learning at home. Please remember that mathematical skills can be applied to many everyday activities such as baking and shopping

Do remember that today’s children use metric measurements so please try to use metres and centimetres, litres, grams and kilograms wherever possible.

We have devised a series of booklets demonstrating how you may support your child’s learning in reading, writing and mathematics progressively as they move through the school. These are circulated annually.

Sometimes children will be given homework relating to other curriculum areas such as research work related to a historical or geographical theme.

Children in KS2 have homework diaries which set out the homework for each week.

Please support your child’s learning by ensuring that homework is completed and sign and return the diary on a weekly basis.

Arrangements for the Consideration of Complaints about the Curriculum and Other Related Matters

We intend to promote good practice in the handling of complaints by ensuring that they are dealt with quickly, fully and fairly with the complainant being kept informed throughout.

It is hoped that concerns about the curriculum and related matters will be resolved informally through discussion with teachers and the headteacher in the first instance.

However, if the concerns cannot be resolved, the stages of the procedures are as follows:

1. Informal discussions (firstly with the headteacher).

2. Written formal complaint to the Chair of Governing Body.

3 Written formal complaint to the Director of Education.
